Julie Andrews

A classy lady with a great sense of fun and who has been beloved throughout generations for her timeless roles in "Mary Poppins" and "The Sound of Music". I chose a clip from the more contemporary "Victor/Victoria" because it is so different from her more iconic roles, and she does a marvelous job as a woman impersonating a man impersonating a woman...yes, that's right...

Dana Andrews

Dana Andrews is one of my favorite actors, along with one of the most underrated talents of his time. I love him in everything whether it's a comedy like "Ball of Fire" or a serious drama like "The Best Years of Our Lives". Here he is playing a detective in love with a ghost in one of my favorite movies - the classic noir, "Laura". Skip to 3:00...

The List - We Begin with Leon Ames

So I'm starting a new post regime! I will be posting a link to a video clip of a classic movie actor or actress every few days. Just to increase awareness about the history of film, and share some of my favorite performances. I have compiled a list of actors and actresses in alphabetical order, and I will be alternating male/female. So here we go! Starting with Leon Ames as the soft-hearted father trying to do what's best for his family at the turn of the century in "Meet Me in St. Louis". Here he is singing a duet with his wife and bringing his family together.

L'Artisans: I Love, I Hate, & In Between

In a world where the knowledge of perfume in my peers is frequently limited to what Sephora or Macy's has on display, I take great pleasure in my non-conformist love of niche perfumes. Don't misunderstand, I have a great obsession with Sephora, and enjoy many of their fragrances. But there is secret treasure in having a love of something relatively unknown to those around you. I have not had much opportunity to explore Serge Lutens, which is commonly viewed as the best of the niche. However, I adore the natural simplicity that is characteristic of L'Artisan Parfumeur, and have compiled a list of the ones I have tried thus far. I list them below according to 'I Love' 'I Hate' and 'In Between', along with my personal opinion of them.

I LOVE

MURE ET MUSC EXTREME
I have never had the fortunate opportunity of trying the original Mure Et Musc, but my understanding is the fragrance has changed and become a bit diluted. Thus I tried the extreme version and love it! Ripe berries with a definite sweetness to them. I don't usually care to wear sweet fragrances, but this one is well balanced enough with musk that I am comfortable wearing it, and frequently reach for it when I want cheering up. Still want to try the original, but this one is fun, and feels like running through a berry garden on a bright summer day.
Notes: blackberries, musk, citrus

MECHANT LOUP
Translated by L' Artisan as 'Big Bad Wolf' and I find it to be a very unique hazelnut-woodsy scent with a touch of sweetness. Like it better on my boyfriend than me, but certainly not enough to prevent me from wearing it myself. Smells like hazelnut and honey, with a bit of darkness I can't quite identify. Leather I think, maybe a bit of incense or spice, and a deep earthiness.
Notes: hazelnut, spices, honey, tonka bean

TEA FOR TWO
Marvelous fragrance, often compared to the likewise charming Serge Lutens' Five O'Clock Aux Gingembre. However, where Five O'Clock is warm and sweet, Tea for Two is spicy and smoky with understated vanilla. Like curling up with a cup of chai tea. Comfortable, cozy, and slightly sensual. This is a very easy scent to wear, great layered with L'Artisan Vanilia, and I frequently reach for it.
Notes: ginger, cinnamon, green anise, honey, vanilla

THE POUR UN ETE
I can have a hard time wearing flowery fragrances because I get tired of the oh-so-frequently headache-inducing scents, so I was hesitant in trying The Pour Un Ete. However, I was very pleasantly surprised.

VOLEUR DE ROSES

I HATE

EXTRAIT DE SONGE/L'ETE EN DOUCE

IN BETWEEN

DROLE DE ROSE
A very unabashedly feminine (almost girlish) fragrance that smells distinctly like makeup. Specifically, rose scented lipstick, with the faintest hint of violet powder. It's an interesting fragrance, to be sure. The lipstick and powder description may seem negative, but I actually found it to be a very pleasant fragrance, particularly the deep finish. Much too feminine for my personal tastes for daily use, but I would probably wear it every once in a blue moon, when the mood strikes me right.
Notes: rose, aniseed, orange blossom, white iris, violet, almond, honey, leather

NAVEGAR
Originally a 'I love' but has now become an 'In between' because of the lime. I got sick after eating some meat with a lime and ginger sauce that smelled just like Navegar, and now I cannot stand the smell. I would put it in the 'I hate,' but that's not really fair since it is a good frag and I enjoyed it so much before my unfortunate dining experience. So I put it in between.
Notes: lime, red pepper, ginger, rum, black pepper, incense, star anise, juniper, cedarwood, guaiac wood

PASSAGE D'ENFER
Loosely translated as 'passage through hell,' this combination of cold lilies and incense feels like a dimly-lit and icy stone cathedral. Beautiful in a cold manner, which is why even though I dislike lilies I still enjoy this fragrance. The lily works perfectly here, since I closely associate the scent of lilies to death. It's placement in this fragrance evokes images of the cold, mysterious underworld. I would rank it among the best of the L'Artisans and it is so close to being on the 'I love' list but for my personal dislike of lily.
Notes: white lily, frankincense, aloe, white musk

A New Year

I think New Years Resolutions are ridiculous traditions that people make to set themselves up for failure. However, I am making a resolution that coincides with this tradition to actually use this blog and post something once a month. I will also be posting one picture a month on my site. I have gotten so caught up and stressed in graduate school that I am completely unchallenged in other artistic areas. I think using these outlets will help me feel more relaxed and encourage better time management. So here's to a new year. Let's see how it goes.
